The Complete Guide for Planning a Honeymoon in Greece

A few months after our wedding my husband and I jumped on the opportunity to honeymoon in Greece. We visited Athens, Santorini, and Mykonos and we planned it all ourselves! If you are looking at planning a beautiful, relaxing, and adventurous honeymoon or trip to Greece, stick around – I have all the secrets!

A few quick details before we hop into it:

Neither of us had been to Greece before so we knew we wanted to do the main attractions. We decided on The Acropolis and Acropolis Museum, as well as the main Islands. We both prefer a boutique experience and wanted a balance of luxury, privacy, and attractions.

If you have never been to Greece before I highly recommend choosing Athens for round trip flights. This will likely give you the best flight price. If you have done Greece and checked Athens off of your bucket list, I recommend flying into Santorini or Mykonos.

Day 1: Fly to Athens

A few months before our trip we got lucky with some reasonable roundtrip flights on United. We were able to bundle a refundable fare, baggage, and economy plus seating to get a fair price. Our layover was at Newark where we unfortunately were delayed for quite some time. First at the airport, then again once we were on the plane. The economy plus seats made a HUGE difference with the extra time we spent on the plane.

Day 1-2: Athens

First we flew into Athens. We scheduled our pickup ahead of time on Welcome Pickups and our driver was waiting for us at the airport. We checked into our hotel, Titania, and relaxed and explored by foot. The hotel’s roof restaurant and view of the Parthenon were worth it in itself. We spent about 2 days adjusting to the jet lag and wandering around the city.

The next day we returned to the Athens airport to fly to Santorini. (Don’t worry, I’ll get to the good stuff on Athens at the end!)

Day 3-6: Santorini

We chose to fly to Santorini because the cost and travel time was reasonable in comparison to taking the ferry. Another Welcome PickUps driver got us from Titania Hotel and back to the Athens airport, where we had a short flight to Santorini.

We chose to stay at Fileria Suites in Oia. Fileria is located right on the main path of Oia, on the opposite side of the road from the caldera. The reception and bell boys were wonderful. They were able to get us checked in quickly and tried to get us in our room as soon as possible since we were early for check in. They held our bags while we walked to lunch and within an hour had our room ready.

In Santorini we got lost along the main path of Oia, enjoyed the view, had fabulous food, and went on a Sunset cruise. Check out my Santorini Travel Guide for a complete itinerary!

Day 6-9: Mykonos

On our last morning in Santorini we enjoyed walking around Oia for a few hours. Then, we checked out of the hotel and were transferred to the Ferry Port of Thira. The hotel arranged our transfer for us instead of using Welcome Pickups and they took care of everything! Our driver dropped us off at the port while we waited for our ferry.

The ferry was a bit late and we had to wait out in the sun with everyone and our bags, but we met some other honeymooners and chatted about our travels. It was kind of a hectic experience getting aboard when the Ferry did arrive, but everything worked out just fine! Once we were up the ramp with our bags, we put them on a rack, then scanned our ferry ticket with one of the crew personnel, and then made our way to our assigned seat. We took off quickly and were able to move around if we wanted another seat. There was also food concessions, bathrooms, and a back deck.

Once we arrived at the Mykonos Old Port our hotel shuttle picked us up and took us to our hotel, Argo Mykonos. Argo is located in the beach town of Platis Gialos. There is a bus that goes straight from Platis Gialos (The stop was right outside of the hotel!) to the start of the Chora, which is Mykonos Town.

In Mykonos we enjoyed the Platis Gialos beach at our fingertips, beach clubs, getting lost in Mykonos town, trying different restaurants, bar hopping and more! Check out my complete Mykonos Travel Guide for more!

Day 9-10: Athens

We were so sad to leave Mykonos but knew we had more to explore in Athens. The Argo Mykonos Hotel shuttle picked us up again and brought us back to the port for our Ferry. Again, we had a to wait a bit with all of our bags. However, the Mykonos port had more covered seating areas so it was more comfortable.

The ferry experience was the same as before, this time taking BLANk hours in total. When we arrived back in Athens at the port of Pireaus, our scheduled Welcome Pickups driver waiting for us. We decided to stay at the same hotel, Titania, that we had stayed at in the beginning of our trip.

We walked around Athens a bit more and made sure we went to bed early. Our plan was to wake up to do the Acropolis first thing in the morning.

The next morning we went to the Acropolis at opening time after enjoying the hotel breakfast. After exploring and returning to the bottom of the Acropolis we went straight to the Acropolis Museum. We walked around for the remainder of the day before having our final dinner at the rooftop restaurant of our hotel, the Olive Garden. Check out my complete Athens Travel Guide for more!

Day 11: Fly home

The next morning we checked out and had our Welcome Pickups transfer back to the Athens airport for our flight home.

On the way home we flew on the window side in Economy Plus, where there are only 2 seats per row. My husband prefers the window and I prefer the aisle, so we both got what we wanted with the privacy of it just being the two of us.

We were so sad to leave but ultimately just so grateful and blessed that we were able to experience part of beautiful Greece for our honeymoon!
